When to Request a Sick/Fit Note

In the UK, knowing when to request a sick/fit note is essential for both employees and employers to ensure compliance with workplace policies and regulations. Here’s a detailed guide to help you understand when you need to request a sick/fit note:

• Absences of 7 Days or More: If you are ill and need to take more than 7 consecutive calendar days off work (including weekends and bank holidays), you are required to provide a sick/fit note from a doctor. This note serves as official evidence of your medical condition and justifies your absence from work.
• Employer’s Request: Some employers may request a sick/fit note for absences shorter than 7 days. While not a legal requirement, this can be part of an employer’s internal policy. If your employer asks for a fit note for shorter absences, you should comply with their request to ensure adherence to company policies.
• Return to Work After a Long Illness: If you have been off work due to a serious or long-term illness, you may need a fit note to confirm you are healthy enough to return to work. This note can also include recommendations for any adjustments needed in your work duties or hours.
